about

I forget why John was in town. I think he was supposed to do live sound for some touring metal band, but he came to Boston for a couple of days to make some music with me before he had to go work. We'd played together a few times when I did a US/Canada tour with his band, Jazkamer. The tour was a lot of fun, and turned out to be productive too. It resulted in our collaborative "Tomorrow No One Will Be Safe" CD (Troniks, US) and Jazkamer's "Proud to Be Un-American CDR (Gameboy Japan). John's solo visit was a more relaxed affair than our tour... no traveling, no trying to find our way to a gig in an unfamiliar town, no wondering whether or not some sketchy promoter would pay us at the end of the night (or, in one case, whether the promoter bothered to tell anyone about the concert), no boring hours-long drives in summer heat, no stress at all... just me and John, recording and relaxing at home.

The first track, "Evening", was created at my studio. John mastered it by running the entire recording through a cassette player with the input jacked up. Neat. The other track was recorded live at a dingy local dive bar called The Midway Cafe, where noise shows happened every once in awhile. The titular heckler was the oft-inebriated fella who owned the place. I remember him shouting at us incoherently while we played. Real charming dude.

Howard Stelzer Massachusetts

Stelzer's music is assembled out of cassette tapes, tape machines, and a stubborn refusal to admit defeat. He & his family live on a small farm in rural MA. At night, he hunches over piles of plastic, wires & little boxes and makes this stuff. No one knows why.
