about

Originally published by Razors & Medicine as a limited-edition cassette tape in August 2010. Partially built out of percussion sounds recorded to tape, then played back on my car stereo while driving in the rain, recorded again onto tape while driving, played back again over the car stereo, recorded in the concrete garage of IKEA, then played/recorded a few more times onto/out of a few more cheap walkman cassette players in various acoustic locations (stairwell of my house, out the window in my studio, in the park at the end of my street, etc). All versions were finally combined until they became "Apricot War Buffer Zone".

The title was my wife's doing. While in culinary school, she pronounced the name of some dish in French, a language she does not speak. Her chef/instructor informed her that she actually just claimed to have baked an Apricot War Buffer Zone.

The rather flattering cover portrait was taken in Geneva, Switzerland, at the start of our honeymoon.

about

Howard Stelzer Lowell, Massachusetts

Stelzer's music is assembled out of cassette tapes, tape machines, and a stubborn refusal to admit defeat. By day, he teaches middle school in Lowell MA, where he and his family live in a really big room behind a power plant. At night, he hunches over stacks of tapes and makes this stuff. No one knows why. ... more
