... a work in progress from a large project with multiple collaborators. The gist of it (in a very quick, overly-simplified way) was: I sent a couple hours of sounds to artists from around the world... some old friends, some new acquaintances, some who I do't know personally but whose work I admire. I asked each person to change my sounds... to manipulate them and render them unrecognizable to me, to take the sounds as far from their origin as possible... and then, I'd compose an album with those changed sounds as the starting point. Multiple motives/ideas at work here, but I won't bother you with those. Instead, here's just a bit of what's happening with the project so far.

Thanks to Theo Gowans & Andrew Zukerman... and maybe Roel Meelkop, though frankly I've been losing track of whose contributions are landing where. I ought to label my tapes better. Someday, perhaps.

about

Howard Stelzer Massachusetts

Stelzer's music is assembled out of cassette tapes, tape machines, and a stubborn refusal to admit defeat. He & his family live on a small farm in rural MA. At night, he hunches over piles of plastic, wires & little boxes and makes this stuff. No one knows why.
